Clark

To the north of Steamboat Springs sits a stretch of townships that are famous for their history of mining and outlaws. The towns of Clark and Hahns Peak are the footholds of homes that rest on the edge of one of the most pristine and legendary tracts of national wilderness in the United States: The Medicine Bow National Forest. Driving along Routt Country Road 129 along the Elk River out of Steamboat Springs, the plethora of historic ranches, fields of golden Timothy Hay, and dense forests of aspen and pine trees take one’s breath away. Clark is the first destination on the road north and was once a Stagecoach stop back in the 1800s. Every outdoor recreational activity imaginable is accessible from the Clark base camp. The Sarvis Creek road that leads out of Clark to the east takes you to the foot of the Zirkel Wilderness, snowmobiling and hunting tours are available through Three Peaks Ranch, Steamboat Lake and Pearl Lake are 8.5 miles up the road, and one of Colorado’s legendary natural landmarks rests silently at the north edge of Routt County. Hahns Peak, named after the gold miner Joseph Hahns from 1865, once stood as the seat of Routt County until 1912. Unlike many other mining towns in the west, Hahns Peak has stood the test of time and is now a successful small outpost of restaurants, outdoor adventure companies, and single-family homes. Homes for sale in North Routt County are for adventure seekers, naturalists, and those willing to endure a little more winter, usually one to two months on either side of the seasonal change. Known for the stars and natural wonder, North Routt provides both to an exceptional degree all while being less than half an hour from downtown Steamboat Springs and the Steamboat Ski Resort.
